Group trains cassava, vegetable farmers, others in Edo



THE Head, Edo State Skills Development Agency (EdoJobs), Ukinebo Dare has said that Youth in Agriculture project had trained batches of youths in cassava and vegetable farming as well as poultry production to contribute to the state’s food security programme.

  She said that they go through various stages of the farming process like soil preparation, nursery preparation, transplanting, maintenance and many others. And each batch gets a starter packs after training, while for poultry, they get birds, feeders and drinkers. Those that benefitted from the cassava farming training have already planted an improved cassava variety, called TME419.  They also go for excursions as part of the training curriculum.

  Meanwhile, She hinted that a new batch of vegetable farmers have just completed their training with their demonstration plot ready for harvest, and that the vegetable farmers are at the last stage of their training and the crops they planted is ready for harvest. The Edo Food and Agriculture Cluster (Edo-FAC) already has aggregators ready to purchase the cabbage, carrots and tomatoes.”

  She reiterated that the holistic approach to agricultural development driven by youths is run through the Edo-FAC, which serves as the aggregators for the produce in the state.
