‘Federer is number one’ – Toni Nadal
IN AN interview to Cadena Ser, Rafael Nadal’s uncle, Toni praised the Spanish player’s US Open final win. “I have not cried but I got really emotional. He seemed to have won the match after the first two sets but Medvedev improved his game and when the Russian started playing great, I told my daughter, Let’s hope a miracle happens.
He ended up doing well.” “It’s not good to tell it because it’s my nephew but it will be difficult for Spain to have a player like this again. In 2005 they told us that his career was finished because of a foot injury, but playing less matches than others and always dealing with injuries, Rafa came back.”
Asked who is the greatest ever, Toni replied: “It’s difficult to say because many things need to be considered now. Roger Federer is the number one. Nadal is among the best guys in history like Novak Djokovic and Rod Laver.
When their careers end, I will tell who is the best ever.” Andrey Cheskonov said: “Medvedev broke through among the favorites joining the Big Three. It’s a pity he did not manage to win a Grand Slam but I think it’s just a matter of time.
Next year at the Australian Open he may win it. I think Dani has good chances to win on any surface except clay. Medvedev showed to be able to play well on clay beating Djokovic in Monte Carlo. But he feels more comfortable on hard courts.”
