Patient kills self at UBTH
A MALE patient at the Accident and Emergency Ward of University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), on Saturday night, was said to have taken his own life while awaiting a doctor’s attention.
The victim (name withheld), was said to have stabbed himself to death when he suddenly became wild and broke the window glass by his bed side which he used in committing the act.
The wife of the patient was away to buy an item at a nearby shop within the hospital premises when the tragedy occurred.
The development led to some protests by most patients in the ward, which was later brought under control.
A witness, who did not want his name mentioned, and who was also admitted in the ward on Saturday night, disclosed that the deceased came to the hospital with his wife.
Confirming the incident to journalists in Benin on Tuesday, the spokesman of the hospital, Mr Joshua Uwaila, described the incident as most unfortunate, as efforts to resuscitate the deceased proved abortive and was later certified dead at about 11p.m, the same night.
Although, the result of the autopsy is still being awaited at the moment, the body of the deceased had been deposited at the hospital morgue.
