GOVERNOR of Imo State, Emeka Ihedioha has approved the suspension of chairmen, vice chairmen and councilors of the 27 local government areas of the state.
The suspension included both appointees of all cadre at the local government level. He equally constituted an interim committee that will last for six months when the local government election will be conducted.
The suspension was contained in a release signed by the governor in pursuant to the recommendation by the state House of Assembly as contained in section 4, 5 and 6 of the local government administration (Amendment) law, 2019 as well as section 73 (3) of Imo
State Local Government Administration law, No 15 of 2000 as amended and other laws which empowered the governor to carry out the exercise.
Consequently, the directors of Administration and General Services (DAGS) of the local governments have been directed to take over the management pending the proper confirmation of the interim management committee by the state assembly.
The governor in the same manner has dissolved the chairman and the members of Imo State Independent Electoral Commission (ISIEC). The action was also in compliance with the provision of section 7(1) of the Imo State Independent Electoral Commission laws and other state relevant laws to that effect.
The commission will be reconstituted soon to put in place the new machinery for conducting credible, fair and free local government election in the state. The disengaged officials should hand over all the commission’s properties in their possession to the most senior civil servants in the commission.
In another development, the governor further dissolved all statutory boards, corporations, agencies and parastatals, saying the exercises was in the overall interest of the state.
The chairman and members are also directed to handover to most senior officer in their respective boards, corporation, agencies and parastatals.
