ABOUT 69 suspected cultists were rounded up in various parts of Anambra State following a massive police raid at criminal hideouts.
Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in the state command, Haruna Mohammed, disclosed this in a statement yesterday, adding that the raids were coordinated by operatives of Special Anti-Cult Squad (SPACS) in conjunction with men of operation Puff Adder.
According to him, 12 of the suspected cultists were arrested in Omor, Ayamelum Local Government Area (LGA) with seven in Nteje, Oyi L. G. A and eight in Igbariam, Anambra East L.G. A while 11 of them were arrested in Nnewi.
Mohammed further stated that seven were found in Ogidi, Idemmili North L. G. A. with two of them nabbed at Ebenebe, Awka North L. G. A. while 22 were nabbed in Obosi-Awada-Nkpor axis of the state.
Meanwhile, out of the 69 suspects arrested, 22 were screened out, 22 suspects charged to Court. 10 suspects were placed under police supervision for being under-aged while 15 others are under investigation.
Similarly, one of the suspects, Osazua Austin and notorious member of the black axe was arrested in possession of a double barrel locally made pistol and is assisting the Police with useful information that will lead to the arrest of other members across the state.
According to him, the suspect has been on the Police wanted list in relation to cases of armed robbery and other heinous crimes, disclosing that Police operatives attached to Federal highway patrol along Oba road recently intercepted a commercial bus and after search was conducted on the occupants, one Emmanuel Okonkwo was found to be in possession of a cut-to-size double- barrel gun with two life ammunition.
He is already helping police with useful information with which to bring his accomplices to book.
