HOME advantage could be key to Mainz ending a depressing run of results with a victory over a Freiburg side who are currently proving much more difficult to beat.
The form team here are very much Freiburg, who have lost only once since the start of February and last weekend dented Bayern Munich’s title chances with a 1-1 draw.
However, the club nicknamed the Brazilians have won just a solitary game on their travels since September, although they have ground out a series of draws over the last couple of months.
Freiburg also do not have a strong record on their visits to Mainz (see stats above) and on the two occasions when other bottom-half-of-the-table teams have visited the Opel Arena so far in 2019, Schalke and Nuremberg were both sent away defeated.
Although his club are not in danger of relegation – they are one place and two points behind Freiburg in lower mid-table – Mainz manager Sandro Schwarz will know he needs to start reversing the decline quickly or his job will be in jeopardy.
Apart from one drubbing against Bayer Leverkusen, the 05ers do not have a bad defensive record on their own pitch this term and while their odds are nothing to write home about, they may just be worth siding with to grab an important three points.
Prediction: Over 1.5 match goals
