Party’s decision, supreme-APC
VETERAN Politician and publisher Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu has said that it is the right of the South-East geo political zone to produce the next Senate President of Nigeria.
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain reasoned that as a major actor in the Nigerian project; Igbo should rightfully take the next prime political position in Nigeria after the North and the South West have clinched the positions of the President and Vice President respectively.
Chief Iwuanyanwu, who spoke to journalists in Owerri, said that Igbo by nature were not used to playing second fiddle and would not be subservient to the extent of begging anybody for their rights.
According to him, the current arrangement in the sharing of principal offices in the National Assembly by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), is to further undermine the position of Ndigbo as one of the three major tribes that make up the country.
“Igbo have made great contributions in the development and unity of the nation and should not be treated with levity at all times. South-East will not beg for the position of the Senate President or Speaker of the House of Representatives.
“Igbo are not fools. Igbo have talented people; we have no doubt in our minds that we are being marginalised. Let me tell other parts of Nigeria how the Igbo feel about issues. Igbo feel they are part of the success of Nigeria right from the time this country was founded. The Igbo have done better than most tribes in Nigeria; Igbo have distributed their resources across the nation.”
“Right now, the Igbo are very unhappy. We have been pushed to a point of contempt and ridicule. There are some people in this country who just ridicule Igbo; some even say that the Igbo have been sacked from this country. Take for instance, the issue of the railway. None passed through Igboland and this is being financed with a loan that all of us will repay”.
Meanwhile, All Progressives Congress (APC) has said that the party’s decision on the selection and zoning of principal officers for the incoming 9th National Assembly is supreme.
A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Mr Yekini Nabena stated this while speaking to newsmen on in Abuja, yesterday.
He said that the party’s decision must be respected by its legislative caucus and opposition lawmakers in the National Assembly.
He, therefore, cautioned the outgoing President of the Senate,Dr Bukola Saraki and Speaker, House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara to steer clear of the leadership in both legislative chambers.
“The APC has learnt its lesson from the outgoing National Assembly when impostors masquerading as party men sabotaged our party and hijacked our mandate; affliction shall not rise up the second time.
“The efforts by the Adams Oshiomhole leadership of the party are commendable in achieving a fair selection and zoning arrangement that appeals to a greater section of the party stakeholders.APC has overwhelming majority in the National Assembly and has a legitimate right to make its choices on the selection and zoning of principal offices…”
