Ihiala tanker explosion: Pregnant woman, children, community burnt



A TANKER loaded with cooking gas has exploded and set ablaze in a neighborhood in Ihiala, Anambra State, killing a pregnant woman and her two children among other casualities. The event happened in an Army Check Point in Ihiala in the early hours of Friday, opposite St. Jude Secondary School, along Onitsha/Owerri Express Way. Eye witnesses said the accident was said to have been caused by stuffed sand bags and drums used by the soldiers at the check point.
It was gathered that the tanker driver, who was in speed that early morning, could not control his truck immediately he saw the drums filled with sand.
While trying to suave through the drums, the gas tanker lost control, and jumped the road demarcation. In the process, the tanker sumersalted and was dismembered into two, thereby leaving the body that exploded on its lane, while the other part comprising the driver’s compartment and the engine jumped to the other lane.
Immediately the tanker fell, it exploded and caused fire outbreak within the area.
The pregnant woman was said to have been sleeping with her two children, in a Celestial Church close to the Army Check Point, when the fire gutted the church building and razed them.
The fire also wrecked two trucks that were stopped by the soldiers at the check point. One of the trucks was filled with palm kernel
Men of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Ihiala Command, Anambra State services, as well as Ihiala Police Division came to the scene of the event, to help quench the fire and  evacuated the burnt pregnant woman and her two children.
When contacted, the Divisional Police Officer of Ihiala was not on seat but one inspector who did not want his name in the press said that investigation is on- going to know the exact cause of the accident.
Angry youths were seen berating the military men, but the situation was later calmed by some people, to avoid more casualties.
