AT LEAST two persons were reportedly killed and 13 vehicles burnt in a pre-election crisis in Obot Akara Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State last week end.
National Light gathered that the affected persons died during a gun duel between some hoodlums belonging to a political party and security operatives on election duties at Nto Edino, Headquarters of the local government area, during the distribution of sensitive materials.
An eye witness who spoke on condition of anonymity, said security had been beefed up in the area as fear and confusion enveloped the community.
The eye witness said, “Two persons were killed and 13 vehicles burnt in the local government area headquarters. The crisis started between the security personnel and some thugs when the INEC officials were distributing sensitive material for the election that never was.”
However, the state Resident Electoral Commissioner, Mike Igini who did not confirm the deaths, said several INEC vehicles were burnt by miscreants suspected to have been sponsored by politicians.
Mr. Igini, who spoke at a press conference in Uyo on Saturday, said the commission would not be threatened or influenced by politicians.
He said, politicians are the greatest beneficiaries of this democracy and have become the greatest threats.
