FG to support science, tech research

PRESIDENT Muhammadu Buhari has reiterated the dedication of his administration to making available intervention fund to support research in Science and Technology in the country. President Buhari who commended efforts the Ministry has put in the advancement of technology which has provided jobs and capacity development in the country, stated this at the First Enugu Science and Technology Expo, held in Enugu City.
President Muhammadu Buhari represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Mr. Boss Mustapha said, “Federal Government has awarded full scholarship up to doctorate level in any science based course of choice to the three winners of the 774 young Nigerian Scientists Presidential Award as part of its effort to promote Science and Technology.” President Buhari praised Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi for the giant stride the state has recorded.
Speaking on the theme “Science Technology and Innovation for Economic Recovery and Sustainable Growth” the Minister of Science and Technology, Chief Ogbonnaya Onu in his address said the event is needed in Nigeria because of the growth in the creativity and inventiveness in Nigeria, using China, south Korea, India as reference, he said science and technology can do for us what it did to those countries.
“We visit schools and our Traditional rulers as a way to encourage our young ones, particularly girls, to show interest in the study of science and mathematics in school. The Ministry in 2017 commenced the process of identifying bright young Nigerians at the Secondary School Level in a program tagged’ 774 young Nigerian Scientist Presidential Award”.
He further said the ministry in the last three years, had encouraged the study of Science and Technology in Nigerian Schools.
