Lamentations as people strive to identify burnt corpses in Enugwu Ukwu Mortuary



Ndi Anambra have been trooping in  and making efforts to identify the burnt corpses at  General Hospital Mortuary, Enugwu-Ukwu.

The mortuary went up in flames on December 29,2018,and burnt some corpses preserved there  beyond recognition.

A visit to the scene of the incident indicated that it was double tragedy for the deceased’s relatives as the pains of losing their loved ones doubled with the burning of their remains.

It was observed that those not directly affected were also moved by emotions to cry profusely  at the scene.

Perhaps, what was  more painful was the difficulties associated with identifying the remains of their loved ones.

Security agents were also observed to be battling with emotions while trying to prevent those who were frenzy at the scene from harming themselves.

Mr Chima Ezeh, an engineer, said he came on that fateful day to see the remains of their brother,deposited two weeks ago but was denied access into the mortuary only for him to receive a call at 3 pm,when he was already at home that the mortuary had gone up in flames.

He lamented that they were yet to identity his remains.

Mr Eze stated that some identified corpses were taken to Amaku General Hospital,Awka,on Dec. 30, leaving unidentified ones behind.

He said they were waiting for morticians from Awka to determine how to go about identifying their deceased relations remains.
Mr Sunday Onuorah,whose deceased brother was deposited two weeks ago lamented that the incident was a double jeopardy.

“We were still crying over the sudden death of my brother before this sad news of fire came’’.

“We are trying to keep this from getting to our mother for fear of losing her too as she is currently hypertensive,’’ Onuora said.

The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained,even as members of the hospital management have been meeting and making consultations.
