We will continue to invest in education – Obiano



GOVERNOR Willie Obiano has reiterated his administration commitment to the development of education in the state. The Governor stated this at the opening ceremony of the 58th Independence Anniversary Inter-SUBEB Schools Debate Championship, held at Anambra State Universal Basic Board Conference Hall, Awka, on Tuesday.
Governor Obiano, represented by Head of Service, Harry Udu, stated that investment in education is significantly important to Anambra State, stressing  that the state has invested much in the area of education, and will continue to invest and already reaping the reward. “We have done well in development in education sector. We have had representations at national and international levels. We did Anambra, Nigeria, and Africa proud at the World Technovision Competition in the US, coming top in the world.”
In his welcome address, National Coordinator, President’s Schools Debate Nigeria, Elder Dare Oritu, who thanked Governor Willie Obiano for hosting this year’s finals, said that debate had been widely used across the world as a tool for dialogue between conflict groups.
“Its significant role in our growing democracy and in the resolution of conflict among various diverse groups in Nigeria is widely appreciated by all and sundry. It is, therefore, with a view to sustaining the ideals of dialogue among students of primary and post-primary institutions across the country that the President’s Schools Debate Nigeria has been committed to organizing the yearly Inter-SUBEB debate championship.”
Anambra State Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Mr. C Don Adinuba, in his remarks said the debate would expose the student to robust interaction that would help them in future. Represented by Nze Uche Nworah, Managing Director, Anambra Broadcasting Service (ABS), he stressed the import the state has attained in education massive to the development of the state.
“The ministry will always support the debate championship. This initiative is also an opportunity to showcase the world class hospitality and peace that we enjoy in Anambra State. I hope that this will also build friendship. When you have programmes like this with children from various states able to interact, exchange idea and knowledge that will help as they grow.”
Anambra State Commissioner for Basic Education, earlier in her welcome address, thanked the PSDN, National Cordinator for the in moulding students in the act of public speaking and giving students international visibility. The commissioner, represented by the Permanent Secretary, Mr. Linus Nwabueze, noted Governor Willie Obiano’s love for education, youth empowerment and students’ skills acquisition, “He has shown so much passion about educational development of our youths and has sponsored our students to so many competitions nationally and internationally.”
