Man killed as police, mourners clash



LAST Friday at TV Road, Oliha Quarters, Benin City, a group of mourners in procession, while conveying a corpse to a funeral venue clashed with a patrol team of the Nigerian Police.
Mourners were alleged to have been shooting into the air as they drove behind the hoarse conveying the corpse from a mortuary to a funeral ground in Useh Quarters, Benin City.
The alleged gunshots were said to have drawn the attention of the policemen who were on duty that Friday moving with unmarked vehicle.
One Osakpamwan Agbons, fell victim of the clash when he was shot dead while the alleged gun-wielding mourners’ convoy encountered the policemen in exchange of fire.
It was gathered that Agbons was allegedly killed by a police officer, who fired back after he allegedly shot at a team of policemen, who tried to disarm him and two others now at large.
A double barrel gun was allegedly recovered from him after other gun-wielding mourners and undertakers abandoned the corpse and the carriage, as well as their cars and fled. The victim’s body has been deposited at the mortuary by the Police.
One Osama Maldona was arrested and now helping the Police in investigation.
Confirming the incident, the Commissioner of Police in Edo State CP Johnson Kokumo, warned against illegal possession and open display of firearms.
The Police boss said, they did not only openly brandish prohibited firearms and also shot at policemen on patrol duty who fired back.
