Awka monarch celebrates new yam festival in style

Traditional ruler to the Awka kingdom, Dr Gibson Nwosu, Saturday, celebrated the 2018 New Yam Festival in style. The event took place in Amikwo Town Hall, Awka, Anambra State.
In his welcome address, Ezeuzu stated that “it is no new thing that new yam festival is a borrowed festival to indigenes of Awka, as what we celebrate back in the days is Otite, where by Awka indigenes in the Diaspora come back home”.
He  also explained that the reason Awka celebrates the new yam festival after other communities is based on the fact that Awka indigenes  are known   to be  blacksmiths,  who manufacture implements of farming, rather than being  farmers. So, it is only coherent that they celebrate the festival last.
He went on with the ceremony by praying, cutting and eating the yam to commence the festival officially.
Prime minister of Awka Kingdom, High Chief Benjamin Okoye, used the opportunity of the festival to warn people who dare to challenge the throne of Dr Gibson Nwosu to have a change of heart, and support their king.  It is no news that once upon a time recently, Dr Gibson Nwosu’s royalty was challenged.
While addressing the crowd, he stated, “when there is a bad son in a society, that society is exploited to the detriment of its citizen.I call on all our erring sons and daughters, whom for one reason or the other have been  instruments of obstruction and distraction to retrace their steps and seek and embrace peace and support their king.”
Among the well wishers was the governor of Anambra State, Dr Willie Obiano, who was represented by Comrade Henry Nwasike, who stated that the state government and the governor, in particular, sent their regards and felicitates with the monarch for a successful new yam festival.
Ben Ndi-Obi, former Senator of Anambra Central Senatorial Zone, was another well wisher present at the event, he was granted the honor of presenting  certificates, as a  reward  to the trusted high chiefs and cabinet members of the monarch,  an honor, which he appreciated by thanking Ezeuzu for granting him such opportunity.
However, Ozor James Eze, the chairman of the Ozo -in – Council, one of the awardees who was recognized and awarded for his loyalty to the throne, in an interview with National Light, sounded a note of warning to   those he classified as imposters of the throne to stop their ridiculous act of illegitimately challenging the Ezeuzu and support their true king.
Highlights of the event includes, presentation of gifts from kings of different communities, cutting of yam by the Ezeuzu Of Awka ,Dr Gibson Nwosu, followed by other kings present at the event, and also presentation of award of certificates.
