CAPITAL Sporst Club, Awka, Anambra State, has called on the people of the state to engage themselves regularly on sport activities to improve their health.
Speaking to National Light in an interview, the president of the club, Engr Obiora Uyuadi Francis, said, “like the saying goes, “the body that exercises regularly rarely goes to the hospital.” He also maintained that one of the aims of the club is to promote exercise amongst adults, in other to burn calories and control the cholesterol level in the body.
The club, which was founded in 2004, was driven by the aim of promoting health benefits of sports. Obiora, also explained that the club is engaged in different sporting activities, ranging from aerobic exercises, football section and table tennis section, including outdoor exercises such as jogging, running and jumping.
On whether women are part of the club, he assured members of the public that the club is gender sensitive and accepts women as members of the club. He also assured that children could come around and exercise with them but will not be addressed as members as the club’s original target are full grown adults, ranging from the ages of 18 and above.
Although the club organizes sporting activities once every week, which falls on Saturdays, they also take advantage of public holidays. However, the president, whose second tenure will end at the end of the year also, advised the members of the public to engage in at least 30 minutes exercise every morning before bathing. He also stated that they have up to 200 active members.
Obiora boldly stated that the club does not discriminate nor categorize prospective members based on tribes and people who wish to join the club will have to fill their forms and the answers to the questions in the form will determine if the applicant is qualified to be a member or not, while the applicants must have two guarantors who are financially up to date as members of the club.
Obiora also disclosed their plans to provide facilities for physically challenged persons to exercise and urged them to join the club. He appealed to the state government to encourage the club with adequate facilities for the sake of the members and most especially, for the benefit of the physical challenged.
He also appealed to the state government to help the club gain access to the land they acquired at Uvunu Layout, near Amawbia as their sport activities are being done temporarily in Ekwueme Square.
Contributing, Nwabuonwu Ogbaji , ex- official member of Capital Sports Club and Permanent Secretary, Anambra State Ministry of Local Government , stated that people tend to think that exercising is only done for weight loss, adding that regular exercise can make one to recover from an illness faster.
“Another bonus for our members is that we have professionals who will advise them on the type of food to eat and how to live a healthy life, especially for the members who are over the age 40.
