NUJ won’t tolerate character assastination – Odusile

PRESIDENT, Nigerian Union of Journalists(NUJ), Abdulwaheed Odusile, ahead of the union’s general election slated for Abeokuta in October, stated that National Executive Council (NEC) has assured a free and fair election of the election.
Odusile stated this at the Ezeemo Int’l Press Centre, Awka, when his campaign organization visited the Anambra Council of the union. Odusile, expressed his worry over unhealthy campaign strategies employed by some candidates, a dimension in the union’s system that he said wouldl not augur well for the council.
“I want to use this opportunity to plead with them stop character assassination. It will only drag us to the mud. This election will come and go and NUJ remains. By assassinating someone’s character the person will not forgive you. And the union will be one that will suffer for it. People out there are reading about our activities. If you destroy the union, when you get there, who do want to lead.”
The NUJ President appealed to other contestestants to conduct themselves within the ambit of the union’s constitution, “only one person will lead the union at a particular time. Somebody should appeal to them not to foul our environment, not to create unnecessary problem for the leadership.”
He expressed his appreciation to the state council for giving him the opportunity to serve and promises to do better when re-elected, “We came here to thank our people for what they have done for us. We were elected three years ago, and enjoyed tremendous support from you. We came here to you thank you and solicit your support to consolidate on the good things we have done and others ones we promise to carry out.”
On ABS crew that were attacked while they were on an assignment and how the union tend to tackle it, besides ensuring the safety of journalists, he said, “If you recall, we raised issue of safety of journalists in the country. It’s now a permanent feature on our calendar. The particular event you are talking about, the state must have taken some measures about that. On the national level, we will deal with such situation. I’m assuring you, we will wade into it. Those who perpetrated that act must be arrested and brought to book.”
When something happens to a journalist and nothing is done about it, we are encouraging future attack. This kind of ugly experience must stop. Enough is enough. The union will do something, I assure you.”
