Police clash with Awkuzu youths claim two lives

TWO persons lost their lives yesterday at Awkuzu in Oyi Local Government Area of Anambra State, following renewed clash by police and youths in the town who were protesting the death of a commercial motorcycle rider allegedly shot dead by some policemen at a road block in the area.
One of the dead was said to be the Okada rider who was allegedly evading arrest by the police but was hit by the police vehicle. The other person lost his life while protesting the earlier death of his kinsmen with some other Awkuzu youths.
Road users had difficulty on the Awkuzu section of Enugu-Onitsha Expressway where human and vehicular movements were hindered for several hours.
Residents say the okada rider was operating beyond the 7:00p.m deadline in the state for motorcycles but turned to evade arrest when he sighted police along the Akwuzu-Onistha expressway, where he was hit by the police vehicle chasing him before he was later confirmed dead at a hospital.
The incident sparked instant furore among the residents leading to a quick mobilisation by the youths who marched to the police station at Nteje in violent protest over the death of their kinsman that night.
But Federal Special Anti Robbery Squad, Awkuzu, trailed the protesters on a rescue mission.
