A’ Ibom lied over frozen account – EFCC

AGAINST the recent media report that the account of the Akwa Ibom State Government has been frozen, the Economic and Financial Criminal Commission (EFCC) has denied the report.
The commission cleared the air on the matter following claims by the state Commissioner for Information and Strategy recently that the account of the state has been frozen by the anti-graft agency.
It could be recalled that the information boss had in a statement said, “the state government will speak on account freezing soon” without giving further details.
But a top official of the EFCC told newsmen recently that the agency had not frozen any account belonging to the state in any bank either in or outside Nigeria.
The officer challenged purveyors of the information to name the details of the reportedly frozen account, the bank which they were domiciled and the amount standing in those accounts.
The official said that there was no reason to freeze the account since Akwa Ibom State Government and the commission was already in court over the movement of state funds.
“The case is already at the Appeal Court since they challenged our powers to investigate the account of the state and the matter has not yet been determined and we cannot embark on self-help”.
