A FORMER Awka Zonal Chairman of the Nigerian Medical Association, Dr. Oliver Onwughalu has asked intending couples to check their genotypes before getting married to avoid bearing children with sickle cell anaemia.
In a press statement in Nawfia on the disease, Dr. Onwughalu emphasized that genotypes which do not match suggests the immediate disqualification by the intending marriage.
According to him, failure to comply with the natural phenomenon will attract unpleasant consequences for the couples and their offspring.
The medical expert advised those already living with the condition to exercise regularly, have good sleep, moderate their lifestyles, avoid smoking, and to expectedly consult their doctors for expert advice.
