Row over APC congresses in Imo deepens

  • Okorocha’s, Coalition groups fight to finish

THE die is cast in Imo APC as the battle for whose camp to which the control of ward delegates as the All Progressive Congress (APC) should swing after the just concluded its ward and local government congresses.

It was gathered that even though Governor Okorocha’s group refused any compromise insisting that there is no going back on its push for a repeat of the exercise throughout Imo State as the only panacea for peace in the party. The group further claimed that the materials meant for the May, 5 ward congress, were hijacked by the camp working against the governor’s interest.

Not a few in the state see the battle for the soul of APC as a show of shame that has a ripple effect in the state machinery of government with every potential of crippling it.

Apart from Governor Okorocha and his camp, other major actors in the unending drama are some influential members of APC in the state under the auspices of The Restoration Coalition, who have shifted the battle line to Abuja in its bid to woo more Imo indigenes and members of APC to join forces with them, and wrest the party’s machinery from Okorocha.

Both the governors’ group is not sparing anything in its bid to stave off the onslaught from The Coalition, accusing them of sponsoring Imo youths in APC who recently went to Abuja for protest over what the group called a regime of “imposition and tyranny” in the state party machinery.

Some of the placards exhibited by the protesting youths read, “Okorocha’s totalitarian rule, we say no”, Okorocha has ruined Imo State, APC please save us from Okorocha etc.

In a related development, members of Imo State House of Assembly have abandoned their legislative duties to take side in the imbroglio, adding to the spate of upheavals in the state in recent weeks that have pitted power brokers against one another.

It is feared that this may be at the centre of the current allegation of a plot to impeach the Imo State Deputy Governor, Eze Madumere who heads the coalition group, as APC gladiators engage in a fight to finish.

It would be recalled that the ongoing tension in Imo APC grew in stature after the party ward congress held in the state recently which throw up accusation and counter accusation as winners and losers trade blames.

Trouble allegedly broke out when Governor Okorocha’s group discredited results of the congress, blaming The Coalition Group of stealing the sensitive materials that were sent from Abuja for the congress.
