World over, people are celebrated for different reasons. Some for academic achievements, scientific discoveries, music, sports, fashion etc. some even burst into limelight carelessly courtesy of what may be seen as negative life style in some climes. The social media has also created a lot of opportunities for the people to be celebrated. National Light entertainment reporter CHIKAODI CHUKWULETA takes a look at who is a celebrity and what qualifies one as such. She writes:
CAMBRIDGE Advanced Learner’s dictionary defines celebrity as someone who is famous especially in the entertainment business while Daniel Boorstin defined it as someone who is well known for his well knowness.
Who is a celebrity?
A celebrity is someone who is famous especially in areas of entertainment such as film, music, writing, sports, beauty pageantry and related fields. They are musicians, dancers, actors, actress, media activists, OAPs (on air personalities), masters of ceremonies, comedians and many others whose vocation share the same territorial boundary with the above named. In Nigeria, there are many celebrities in music, sports, writing, films etc.
Wizkid: Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun, known professionally as Wizkid is a Nigeria singer and song writer. He started recording music at the age of 11 and managed to release a collaborative album with the glorious fire, a group he and couple of others in his church formed. He was born on July 16, 1989, and recorded his first album at the age of 11. The album was produced by one of the most celebrated music producer in the country, OJB Jezreel and it was a 7-track album that was released for his church in Lagos. His growing passion for music inspired him to get back into studio and perfect his music arts. Today, his music is making waves in the country.
Stephanie Okereke Linus: A famous nollywood actress, model, film director, producer and philanthropist. She was born October 2, 1982 in Ngor Okpala, Imo State. She joined the Nigeria movie industry and starred her first movie “Compromise and Water” in 2002, later won the most beautiful girl in Nigeria beauty pageant hosted by Silver Bird Television in 2007. Okereke released her first movie “Through the Glass” in which she served as a director, script writer, producer and actress.
Mikel: John Michael Obi is a Nigerian professional footballer who plays as a midfielder for both English club, Chelsea and the Nigeria national team. He started his football career when he was twelve years old and was identified and selected from among 3000 talented young footballers to play in Pepsi Football Academy. Mikel Obi, during the preparations for the 2003 FIFA Under-17 World Championships, the Nigerian Football Association mistakenly submitted Michael as Mikel. He has won several awards.
What makes one a celebrity?
Ijeoma Ike, a level two student at Federal Polytechnic, Oko, said, celebrity is someone who is famous in the society, who attain celebrity status for no particular identifiable reason, who achieves fame through association with a celebrity.
Ada Ike, a graduate of University of Nigeria, Nsukka said, celebrity is somebody who achieves a small amount of transient fame through mass media.
Uju Anyanwu, a civil servant said, celebrities are those that have attained to the level of been famous in the field of their endeavors.
Chima Egwu said, celebrities are not only models as people think, adding that they are people who have contributed immensely to the development of the society, through either by then NGOs foundation, pet projects that can be classified as celebrities.
