A 26 year-old man identify as Kelechi Ineke arrested and detained  in Abaomege Police Division, Onicha Local Government Area of Ebonyi State for alleged crime of cultism, assault and threat to life at the course he committed suicide and died in the police cell.

The incident  which occurred on Easter Sunday afternoon  attracted angry youths who vandalized the police station after burning down the house while Policemen on duty reportedly fled the area.

His relatives had gone to the station to secure his bail when the DPO allegedly denied him the bail on the ground that his case was a serious one.

A day later, one of the Ineke’s relative came to the station to see him only to be told that he was dead.

When he reported the matter to the village, the youths quickly mobilized and attacked the police station.

Sources from the community told National Light that Ineke was tortured to death by policemen on duty in the station as according to them, he was hale and hearty.

But the state Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Loveth Odah who confirmed the incident to our Correspondent, absolved the police from his death.

She noted that Ineke used a rope from his boxers(shots) and hanged himself on the cell door which resulted to his death.

Odah said, “around 3:40pm of 1st April, 2018 a Sergeant on duty

visited the cell and found out that one suspect, Kelechi Ineke detained for a case of cultism, assault and threatening violence according to the DPO has committed suicide.


“He used a rope from his boxers to tie himself and hanged it on a cell

door. One of his family members who  came to the police station, found

out what happened and informed the youths who  mobilized and came and attacked the

police station.
