C’River arrests 529 crime suspects in 2017


A REPORT from Calabar, cross River State capital says no fewer than 529 suspects were arrested and paraded by the Cross River Police Command between February 1st and December 31st, 2017. Within the period, the police also said it recovered 234 assorted firearms.

Presenting the 2017 score card before newsmen in the area recently, the state Police Commissioner, Hafiz Inuwa said of this number, 186 were armed, 83 committed murder, 40 were kidnappers while 80 were caught in possession of unlawful firearms.

The Police Commissioner also revealed that 60 cultists were arrested and paraded last year while 29 persons went in for stealing and conspiracy.

Still in 2017, the police boss said, child stealing was six, rape 21, sea piracy 5, defilement four, internet fraud two, abduction one and attempted murder nine.

Also within the year, the commissioner said, three additional area commands of Tinapa, Ugep and Akamkpa were created by the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim K. Idris.

In 2018, Inuwa disclosed that a total of 51 suspects have been arrested for various offences and lots of exhibits recovered from them.

The police boss said the command was more determined this year to surmount all forms of criminalities, burst criminal hideouts as well as expose all criminal elements operating within the state.
